Yes, HTTP and HTTPS manage the underlying connection HTTP is clear and HTTPS is encrypted. The do not effect what you put into the browser, only how it is transferred. For security sakes always use https when entering in secure data like passwords or banking details.

I'm afraid Yahoo (And I think MSN also) still haven't upgraded their service to full SSL - right now only the Login phase is encrypted.

GMail does have such a feature, where you can stay encrypted while reading your mail.
