Sony Trinitron XBR, Stand By Mode?

I have a Sony Triniton, I think it is the 36in model, and it will not turn on. When you go to turn it on it makes the sound like it is going to come on , but it does not. I will wait a while sometimes and try again, and it will turn on. There is a red blinking light that indicated stand by, and will blnk for 6 or 7 times. Do you have any ideas on this problem? Thanks

Same problem on mine. Left the set turned off for about 2 weeks then it turned on again and we just left it on for about a month. It went out again and I just haven't had a chance to do anything with it.

  • rwmcvargas Jun 21, 2008

exactly the same problem as discussed above.

  • brookebenz24 Jul 12, 2008

Very coincidental that all of us are having this happen around the same. Just had my TV make the pop sound, won't turn on and the stand by light is flashing. The manual (yes i still have the manual from 2002) says to call Sony, that the TV may need to be "serviced". Of course, it's Saturday and Sony is closed. Has anyone called or tried service?

I also have a Sony Trinitron - model number KV-27V40 - purchased in 2002. I have sound and no picture. The standby light flashes 6 times and then pauses and then repeats. I would love to know if anyone has a solution to this.

Started experiencing a problem with my Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-34XBR910 34" TV around July 15, 2008. Sometimes I have to turn the switch on and about 100 times before it comes on. Lately, I haven't been able to get it to turn or at all. It makes a popping sound like it wants to turn then but then doesn't. Standby light blinks but nothing happens. Fortunately my wife was smart enough not to listen to me and got the extented warranty anyway. Hopefully it's covered. I'll keep you posted.

  • xbrtvboy Jul 26, 2008

I also have a 36" XBR (older 4x5) and the same thing is happening. Just a guess but I susppect there is a bad capacitor in the HV circuit. It could be something else like a relay. However I know a few years back the electonics industry had major issues with a laurge quanity of bad caps that went into millions of computers and other electronics and expected to see products fail for years to come.

  • kspmdu Aug 19, 2008

I have the same issue. Its exactly 5 years. I can not believe you invest like $2700 and its gone bad in 5 years due to a faulty chip. Sony should acknowledge and help the customer service this bad chip. Its Olympic and we could not watch any. I would not buy any Sony products. They are not customer oriented any more

I have a 36 inch Sony Trinitron TV that will not turn on. It was fine one minute and when I went to turn it back on it would not come on. It makes the sound like it's coming on and then turning right back off. The standby light continues to blink. I talked to Sony and they said that we had to take it to be serviced. This TV is only 4 years old and it's too big to take to get serviced. It will sometimes turn on after a day or so of not trying it but then as soon as you turn it off it goes into standby mode again. There must be a way to get it out of standby so that it will turn on and off normally.

I have Sony KV34XBR910 only 3 or 4 years old, it may come on today, then when i turn it off, it will not turn on again. i unplug it, leave it for a day, then it turns on again. It tries to turn on, acts like its going to come one, but the stanby light flashes several times and then no TV. It is getting worse and worse, Will not turn on at all now, this has been going on for 2 weeks. I need to figure out how to fix this if possible, if not, how do I find a qualified honest technician to fix it. I cant stand it.

    THANK YOU.

  • xtang Mar 16, 2009

I have exactly the same problem. It doesn't come on after I press power on. Stand-by flashes 6 times. I kept it on for a week and one day I forgot and turned it off. The it'll never turn on. I bought the 34inch wide screen XBR exactly 5 years. **** Sony ! My Sony DVD/VHS player died too. I'll call Sony service. I don't have extended warranty. But I'll never buy a Sony ever again.

I have the same issue as Greg (4 blinks) and 36 inch TV. So much for watching the NCAA championship game on that TV. Anybody have any ideas?

  • sisk882 Apr 07, 2009

Same issue. Just happened yesterday. 2002 36" Sony Trinitron XBR High Def TV. When you turn it on it sounds like it's going to come on but it remains black and the standby light flashes in sets of 6. This is rediculous.

  • Anonymous May 04, 2009

sony XBR. Same problem, clicks but my light flashes are four flash, then seven flash sequence.

  • gtalcott May 11, 2010

I've got the four blinks (V-HOLD?) on my Sony KV-36 XBR 910. Any options other than calling in a TV repair guy?

    Thanks, Greg.

Many of the later model Sony TV?s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it. The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again. Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article. Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open). Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective. One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits. Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672. Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505 Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly. Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits. Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board. Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive). Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

I have the same problem with my tv, its blinking seven times and after leaving it unplugged for days and trying to turn it back on it still doesn't turn on but it makes the sound that it is. What else can I try? any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    M

  • kevin353 Dec 01, 2010

7 blinks. I just plugged it into a different outlet . Worked just fine. I will find out in a few days if it was the problem. Looks like it was a voltage problem with the electical outlet.

I initially posted on July 20, 2008. At first started to panic because I wasn't sure it was still under warranty. Then started hyperventilating when I found out the place where be bought our TV (GoodGuys) was out of business. However, I called the number of the warranty and realized that it was still (barely) under extended warranty. I was expecting a big fight given that the place where we bought the TV was out of business, but no. A repair man showed up, counted the blinking light and said, "oh no. I'm gonna have to take it in." The repairman show up the next day with another guy ('cause as you all know, this monster weighs about 250 lbs.) and they hauled it down to the repair shop. A week later, it came back good as new. Hopefully, I'll get another five years out of this TV, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

The guest that posted Solution #10 on October 12, 2008 refers to an excellent website http://www.techlore.com/article/15444/Understanding-Sony-Television-Blinking-Codeshttp://www.techlore.com/article/15444/Understanding-Sony-Television-Blinking-Codes that discusses the blinking light diagnostic codes.

My advise is that if you have an extended warranty, (even if it's already expired) that you try to get them to honor it. If you live in the Los Angeles, CA area, have the name of the repair shop that did the service and they were very prompt and so far (keep my fingers crossed) the TV's working just like new. If you nave more questions, you can email me directly at: [email protected]

SOURCE: Sony Trinitron XBR, Stand By Mode?

Generically, the 6 or 7 blinks usually indicate a problem with the horizontal circuit. In order to provide accurate diagnosis and suggested solutions, the exact model number is needed. Please update this with tha number and I will post more details.

SOURCE: Sony Trinitron XBR, Stand By Mode?

The 6 or 7 blinks usually indicate a problem in the horizontal circuit. Since the TV recovered once, the problem is most likely to be a bad solder connection in that area. If you can solder, resolder any connections on the board that appear grainy or have rings. That may resolve the problem. If not, update this and we'll look elsewhere for defective parts.

Tv does not turn on

The power supply is in the protect mode. This is most likely a scan amplifier failure. Most of the time it would be in the horizontal output section. If the CRT is shorted, or there is a failure in the vertical section, this type of error will show. When there are scan amplifier failures, sometimes the power supply is also damaged and requires service.
