Java installation problem

I am trying to download and install Java. Halfway through the installation I get the error message 25099 - I have tried everything I can think of including reading a number of online tips all to no avail.

One answer was to delete Java which doesn't exist on my computer because I can't install it - and reinstall it!. I feel as though I am going round in circles.

I have Windows XP Pro and recently reinstalled all my software after a boot problem which is why I need to reinstal java.
