I have a playstation 2 silver slimline console and i went to play god of war 2 (after waiting 27hrs in a blackout) and it says unable to read disc, yet when i put in older and scratched ps2 games they work perfectly!!!! i took the Disc to a mates place who has the older style chunky black console and it works!! i tried other games and they work, i tried an old DVD, that works but when i put in a BRAND NEW DVD it didnt work either, i received the same message unable to read disc. i changed the speed of the disc (spin thingy) to smooth and fast but to no avail. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!! i dont understand why it works on used games but not new ones. wouldnt it be the other way around??????? THANK YOU AMBER (central coast, Australia)
Sony also brought out a mod for these .common problem ..it is an over voltage problem to the laser ..if it is still under warranty take it back.
Hi there. Are the older games you're trying to play CD games ? They might be :) The laser lens in such consoles can be fried on the dvd part, but still read CD's. Have you tried, to read a DVD Movie in it ? I bet it doesn't work either. The slimlines are infamous for laser burnout, and god they're quick to burn. You can try to clean your laser lens with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol, but i'd say you're already out of luck. The optical lens is quite easy to replace in those units. They can be found on ebay and on various websites for 20$, and if you can play a bit with a phillips screwdriver, chances you'll be able to replace it yourself with a bit of patience are good enough. If you need additional help just ask, hope that helps ! cheebster.
