Does anyone know what this means ?
E:61:00 means difficulty in focusing by the lens block. On the MR pin sensor Board CD-285,CN2031 Pin No.8,9 check when peforming the manual focus control. When the focus control is not adjusted manually, check the IC751 on the Mounted circuit board VC253 which controls the focus motor. If you need service manuals write to me.
I tapped the lens barrel and turned it back on. Problem solved
I was getting the same error (E:61:00). I read your diagnosis and one here (http://www.fewin.com/sony/sony.htm). I gently tapped the lens barrel on all sides and then switched on the camera. NO ERROR !! Thanks guys.

Believe it or not, giving it a bash got it to work. Not too hard, just a few sharp smacks on the side.
It's something in the cassette carrier mechanism.
