When we turn the TV on the red light flashes but we can't get a picture or sound. We have changed the batteries in the remote control.

There is a problem in the set, the blinking l.e.d is numbered by way of the number of blinks. It might be your IFT, better known as your high voltage transformer, those codes helps the tech isolate where the problem most likely is.

A reset won't fix this. The standby light should be blinking a repeated count with a 3 second pause inbetween. Post that count here. That will indicate the circuit/condition that is preventing the set from turning on.
Thanks,

It seems the high voltage flyback
autotransformer has failed along with the horizontal amplifier (they are slaved
to each other). Do you hear any clicking sounds?
Or else it could be that the CRT tube is faulty and will need to be repaired/replaced.
Well, the only way to solve this is to get a technician take
a look at the set, I'm afraid. Repairs could cost upto $100 or more, depending
upon the number of components that need to be replaced,
It may be worth getting fixed up. If you decide to do so,
call around, as shops have different rates and different expertise.
Hope that helps!
