1990 miata cooling fan and a/c fan

My cooling fan only comes on when the airconditioner is on , and not the a/c fan. the car overheats because the cooling fan does not come on. i already tried testing both fans directly and the both work. a mechanic looked at it and said it was not grounded somewhere. i am trying to get the fans working correctly and get the a/c working also. Help!

Has anyone checked the connections to, and the function of the main fan's thermostat? These aren't the most reliable devices.

A low-cost multimeter would allow you to check for a missing ground pretty quickly if you don't mind getting grubby from the efforts.

Best would be removing the thermostat and testing it in hot water with a thermometer or just replacing it but either would require the draining of coolant.

Thermostats are typically located on the bottom tank of the radiator, are cylindrical in shape, ~ 1" (2.5 cm) in diameter, and either one or two wires potted into the end of the housing.

Checking them in hot water whould show them operating and producing a short (low resistance) path once they are above their operating temperature.

I don't see how a missing ground could cause the AC fan to operate in place of the cooling fan unless (VERY unlikely) connections have been swapped since in that case, the cooling fan would run with the AC turned on.

I think Mazda is bright enough to use connectors that are not interchangeable.

A multimeter is good but can give you a false reading . i would check with a test light first

Your problem is nothing to do with electrics, it's your thermostat.

What's happening is that the thermostat isn't registering that the radiator is hot and so doesn't open the value to the top hose. The fans will work only when triggered by this sensor. That's why when you switch on your air con both fan work fine. As a double check you'll find that the top hose is hot but the bottom hose is cold, they should be the same temperature. Just be careful when reaching the bottom hose as it's hard to get to. Thermostats are only £12 from Halfords c/w gasket.

1990 BMW 525i 2.5L engine overheats after rplaceing water pump, stermostat,fan clucth,radiator

There's trapped air in the cooling system.
  • You need to remove the bleeder screw on top of the radiator when adding water to the expansion tank.
  • With the engine running, pour water into the expansion tank till you see air go out through the bleeder screw's hole.
  • Just keep adding water until no more air bubbles come out then just put the screw back in place.
  • Then fill the expansion tank to it's normal level/line.

Only one of my radiator fans are working and the car overheats i have 1990 chys. newyorker 3.3 liter

One works with the A/c, the other is for the cooling of the motor,, turn on the ac and see if the other one comes on, if it does, check the relay for the other one, or it could be the heat sensor

Mazda mx5 1990

The thermostats on Mazdas are notorious for kicking out and causing the fans to either not initiate or go on without effective results. My Protege went through 3 before I got my Miata, and I learned how to change the thermostat when it went out the first time. Hopefully, there won't be a second time, but whenever the car overheats and I notice the fans don't come one, I always assume it's the thermostat, and that's always the cause. If you don't want to fix it yourself, take it to a dealer, they're very accustomed to changing thermostats in Mazdas, believe me.

Car overheating

when the car is cold, fill the radiator, start the car. Leave it running with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens. If it opens the fluid in the radiator will be circulated by the water pump and the electric fan will turn on and cool the radiator. If not, the engine will overheat because either the thermostat is not opening or if the fan doesn't come on, the fan sensor is probably at fault, or both. If there is a noise and fluid leak, the problem could be the water pump. If there is no fluid leak, the problem is likely the thermostat or the fan sensor.
